Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865), English writer. Although best remembered for her novels dealing with social and industrial realism — Cranford, North and South — Gaskell also wrote numerous Gothic, supernatural short stories. In ‘The Old Nurse’s Story’ a ghostly child haunts a lonely moor, while ‘The Poor Clare’ tells of an eerie doppelgänger formed by a mother’s bitter curse. These tales, and others, are an interesting contrast to her social realist fiction.
