Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875)
It’s perhaps a little-known or often overlooked fact that Andersen was possibly bisexual. At the same time when he confessed his love to the famous opera singer Jenny Lind, he simultaneously conducted an intensely intimate affair with the Danish aristocrat Henrik Stampe. A few years later he also became infatuated with Carl Alexander, the Grand Duke of Weimar, and he wrote in his diary: ‘[The Duke] told me he loved me and pressed his cheek to mine…received me in his shirt…he pressed me to his breast, and we kissed.’ One of his novels, O.T. (1836), also contains a scene in which two cross-dressing men accidentally end up caressing each other.
